Gas as the Lynchpin for the Global Energy Evolution
Earlier this week, at EGYPES 2026, the Vice President of the International Gas Union (IGU) – Cav. Eng. Khaled Abubakr – attended a panel discussion entitled “Global Energy Transition – The Next Phase” where he shared his insights on key developments shaping today’s energy markets.
In his intervention, Mr Abubakr discussed the recent surge in the global energy demand and its continued growth, highlighting the critical importance of a constructive and mutually supportive dialogue between society, industry and policy makers, to ensure a pragmatic balance between environmental policies and socioeconomic development:
“Sustainability is a critical pillar. And when we talk about sustainability, energy needs to remain affordable —for households and for the economy— and available. This is why having a resilient, well‑structured system, is essential to the global energy security.”

IGU’s Vice President also emphasised the unique position of Gas as a flexible and versatile commodity, noting that the innovations spearheaded by the global Gas industry are at the forefront of today’s scientific boundaries:
“Gas plays a critical role in tomorrow’s diversified energy mix. What we are witnessing now is a geopolitical crisis rather than an energy one, yet its repercussions are wide and profound, affecting not just the energy sector – particularly oil and natural gas and LNG trade – but, fundamentally, key economic sectors that are largely dependent on these.”
