Industry Collaboration and Dialogue are Essential for a Realistic Decarbonisation of the Global Energy System

Present earlier this week at the Energy Exports Conference organised by the Energy Industries Council in Aberdeen, UK, IGU’s Communication Director and Senior Adviser to the Secretary General, Mrs Ella Minty, took part in a panel session entitled “The New Rules of Energy Trade: Navigating CBAM, OGMP and Emerging Battery Regulations”.

Joining Mrs Minty on the panel were Mr Benjamin Lechaptois - Carbon and Climate Services Director at Bureau Veritas, Mr Hayden Morgan - Partner, Head of Climate and Sustainability Consulting at Pinsent Masons, Ms Martha Vasquez - Partner & Director at Boston Consulting Group and Mr Ian Thomas - Senior Principal Consultant at Vysus Group. The panel was moderated by Mr Ken Smith, VP Global Sustainability Transition Services at Bureau Veritas.

While the discussion of the panel was largely focussed on the complexities of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism Regulation (CBAM) and of wider EU Methane Regulation, the panellists also touched upon the realities and strides made by the wider oil and Gas industry to decarbonise and reduce its methane emissions.

In this regard, Mrs Minty emphasised IGU’s recent policy positions asking the European Commission to urgently rethink its methane emissions reduction regulation and to preserve a key production pathway for renewable maritime fuels, as well as the commitments made by many IGU members to reduce their methane emissions by at least 30% and operate with near zero leaks by 2030.

In her remarks, Mrs Minty made it very clear that industry dialogue and knowledge-sharing platforms, such as IGU’s Methane Action Group, are essential in taking forward the global Gas industry’s efforts to decarbonise and reduce its methane emissions footprint.  She has also highlighted the clear focus of IGU’s magazine, Gas In Transition, on the Gas industry’s innovations, particularly with regard to emissions management, best practices, latest technological developments and lessons learnt.
