While global energy availability has grown significantly, Africa’s growth in absolute terms has been largely offset by rapid population expansion, limited infrastructure investment, and persistent structural and financial barriers. As a result, the average African today has access to about the same amount of energy that they did in the 1980s — a reality that underpins many of the continent’s social and economic challenges. By contrast, energy supply in Asia — once on par with Africa in the 1960s — has increased sixfold over the past decades, powering the region’s structural economic transformation.
