  • IGU’s President Delivers the Welcome Remark at the 11th Energy Executive Forum

Last week, during the 11th International Energy Executive Forum organized by China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) and S&P Global held in Beijing, the President of the International Gas Union (IGU), Madam Li Yalan was invited to deliver a welcome remark during the opening ceremony, in which she shared IGU’s energy transition perspectives and insights.

This prestigious annual forum whose 2024 theme was “Balancing the Multi-Dimensional Energy Transition, Building a Sustainable Future” attracted nearly 400 experts and scholars from government bodies, industry associations, international energy companies, global think tanks and research institutions, as well as financial investment organisations.

In her remarks, Madam Li highlighted the role of Gas in the context of a multi-dimensional energy transition:

  • Natural gas is the basic energy to meet global energy demand and ensure global energy security
  • Natural gas is an important source of energy for improving the accessibility, resilience and flexibility of the global energy systems
  • Natural gas, the cleanest fossil fuel, is the foundation for a just energy transition, especially for developing economies
  • Natural gas is the best partner for renewable energy.
  • Renewable gases have great potential to contribute to the world’s energy transition.

Madam Li also called for a rational and objective energy transition, for continuous investments across the entire Gas value chain and for much tighter methane mitigation measures across the global Gas industry.

The IGU President also held high level meetings with Mr. Daniel Yergin PhD, the Vice Chairman at S&P Global, and Mr. Carlos Pascual, the Senior Vice President for Global Energy at S&P Global, as well as other global energy leaders such as H.E. Ren Jingdong, the Deputy Director of National Energy Administration of China, Mr. Dominique de Villepin, the former French Prime Minister, Mr. Haitham Al Ghais, the Secretary General of OPEC, and H.E. Mr. Marcos Galvão, Brazil’s Ambassador to China.

The Secretary General of the International Gas Union, Mr Menelaos (Mel) Ydreos also addressed the Forum in an online intervention, during the “Natural Gas Market: New Order of Supply and Demand and New Pathways for Development” session, and in his keynote address he introduced IGU’s Manifesto which demonstrates how essential Gas is to human progress and global growth.
