During 29-30 of October 2024, IGU’s Vice President – Mr Andrea Stegher – attended the IX Energy Week of Latin America and the Caribbean, organised by the Latin American Energy Organization (OLADE) in Asunción, Paraguay.
A panellist in the Methane Emission Observatory and Low Emission Natural Gas event that took place on Tuesday 29 October 2024, Mr Stegher emphasised IGU’s belief that high ambition and strong action to aggressively drive down methane emissions are key to maximising gas’ commercial and environmental value, as many IGU members are already committed to reducing their methane emissions by at least 30% and operate with near-zero leaks by 2030. This belief also underpins IGU’s championing of a zero-methane emissions culture, including deployment of monitoring, verification and emissions reduction technologies.
On the 30th of October 2024, Mr Stegher represented the IGU during the OLADE Business Council session, where the 27 Energy Ministers from OLADE member countries convened alongside senior representatives from regional companies to address topics of public-private collaboration, regional regulatory issues, and perspectives on alliances and collaborations aimed at boosting investment in the energy industry, including innovation, financing, regulatory framework, and socio-environmental integration.
During his intervention, Mr Stegher commented: “The International Gas Union is strongly committed to foster an open and active dialogue to promote both socioeconomic development and a pragmatic, viable and sustainable energy transition. Natural gas, low-carbon gases and related technologies will be essential to achieve these targets, and investments in these technologies require appropriate policy support. We commend the work already developed within OLADE, and we will continue working with all stakeholders to strengthen the regional integration and further enhance the positive impact of gas in the Latin America and Caribbean region”.
