The IGU Presidency election for the 2028-2031 triennium took place at the just completed IGU Council meeting, where Charter and Premium Associate members of the IGU’s Council casted their votes.
Mr AbuBakr has 39 years of successful experience in gas management and played a pivotal role in advancing the gas sector in Egypt, Africa and the Middle East. He is the Chairman of the Egyptian Gas Association, President of the Italian-Egyptian Business Council, Vice-President of the American Chamber of Commerce in Egypt and has been IGU’s Africa Regional Co-ordinator for over 12 years, as well as a member of IGU’s Executive Committee.
Madam Yalan Li, the President of the IGU, remarked on Mr AbuBakr’s election: “Mr. AbuBakr is well-known to the IGU community and the wider global gas industry, he knows IGU’s history and is more than capable to lead IGU towards the future. This is the first time in IGU’s history that we shall have a President from Africa. I believe IGU will benefit from the critical role Egypt plays in the future world gas industry.”
Mr AbuBakr commented: “I am honoured and delighted to have been elected by IGU’s Council members as our Union’s 2028-2031 President. I shall ensure that my expertise of almost half a century in the gas industry will serve not just our members and the wider global gas industry but, also, the global political and regulatory dialogue required to ensure that gas and its incredible role in the world’s energy transition take centre stage”.
