Against a persisting energy deficit, Africa’s natural gas reserves have continued to grow steadily over the past two decades. To date, natural gas has been discovered in 24 countries, with Zimbabwe becoming the most recent addition, confirming the continent’s strategic role in the global natural gas landscape. Currently, Africa has some 15-17 trillion cubic metres (Tcm) of proven natural gas reserves, accounting for over 8% of the world’s total. While large natural gas discoveries have traditionally been made in Nigeria, Algeria and Egypt for decades, natural gas exploration took a new turn over 2010-2020 with world-class discoveries made offshore Senegal-Mauritania, Tanzania and Mozambique.
