Until China began importing LNG in the mid-2000s, followed by pipeline gas in 2010, the wholesale natural gas prices in China were heavily regulated. That has gradually changed in the last 20 years, with LNG and pipeline gas introducing, initially, OPE into the market, followed by GOG for significant volumes of LNG. These developments led to the gradual introduction of more market-based pricing – mainly OPE, but some GOG as well – with some regulation remaining for gas destined for households.
